Established just eleven years after the founding of South Australia, the ancient vines in the Hundred Of Moorooroo were planted circa 1836 by the Jacob brothers, after accompanying Colonel William Light on the Seven Special Surveys expedition to populate Adelaide's north. Moorooroo endures as the nation's cardinal parcel of vine, the mother rootstock for many of the Barossa's most distinguished sites. For over a century, these sacred vines contributed fruit to the Orlando company, where they formed the backbone of countless spectacular historical vintages. Decimated by the government sponsored vine pull schemes of the 1980s, only four rows of these priceless vines were saved by master Ed Schild from complete annihilation. Delamotte is finely balanced and totally elegant. A cepage of half Chardonnay with the balance Pinot Noir and Meunier, marked by power yet devoid of aggressiveness, crafted to deliver a clean, fruity finish. Le Mesnil-sur-Oger, Avize and Oger are villages where Chardonnay lights up the landscape. This delicate variety, grown to the great Crus of Cote des Blancs, finds the perfect combination of soils and clime to retain its freshness over time. The grapes are hand picked and sorted by growers who have supplied Maison Delamotte for generations, treated to a gentle Wilmes press, followed by vinification and malolactic. The final wine is rested on yeast lees sur lie for a minimum of three years before release.
A light gold colour, its unctuous freshness is underlined by the subtlety of a fine effervescence. Great purity on the nose, along with notes of citrus, white flowers, lemon peel and moss. A generous, clean champagne, of tenderness and smiles, a must for the cellars of those who love life.
