Somewhere near the Seaview end of McLaren Vale's Chapel Hill Road, a perfunctory passerine perched her pincers astride a pair of power poles and saw herself alit. Down she went amongst the dry grown branches of an old Grenache vineyard, setting the valuable veterans ablaze. The scorched site eventually came to the attention of a winemaking trio, the Messrs Leske, Tynan & Cooke, Masters of Wine and a venerable vintner, all driven by a consuming passion to make greater Grenache. There are four tiny patches of vine at Scotchman's Hill, which have been mollycoddled by Robin Brockett, since the start of his tenure as chief winemaker in the 1980s. Excruciatingly limited after a strict pruning and rigorous sorting of fruit, they each yield a mere hundred cases of wine. Brockett has set aside the precious harvests of these superior blocks for his own label, a personal project to hand craft the finest of vintage, an exclusive range of the Bellarine's most elite single vineyard efforts. Crofters were Scottish tenant farmers who shared the proceeds of harvest with their landlord. Still functional at the Houghton wineworks, is a restored historical homestead of Crofter design. Today, the Houghton team remains at the forefront of viticultural expansion and innovation throughout the premiere winegrowing precincts of Western Australia. It's a well kept secret that Frankland River yields a quality of Cabernet Sauvignon that's world class and second to none. Crofter sings in complete harmony with it's resonant fruit and long delving finish.

Houghton own and operate significant vineyard holdings in most of WA's premier appellations, the winemakers retain access to an exhaustive catalog from which to source the pick of Cabernet Sauvignon. Close management of vines and a holistic approach to viticulture make a major contribution to the ultimate quality of wine. Parcels are assembled from choice Frankland River sites, treated to vinification through the action of wild yeasts in traditional open top fermenters and gently pressed off skins at dryness into a selection of French oak barrels, for completion of malolactic and an extravagant sixteen months maturation.
Dark red, scarlet hues. Lifted aromatics of black olive and cassis, dark currants and blueberry are supported by the cedar and spice of French oak. Fruit forward palate of raspberry and cassis, loganberry and black bramble fruit flavours, supported by fine tannins and firm acidity, a wine of superb texture and splendid length.

Established in 1836, Houghton has the enviable position as Western Australia's most awarded winemaker

Houghton Wines, based in the heart of the Swan Valley, contains a wealth of romantic history. Named after Lieutenant Colonel Richmond Houghton in 1836, the first commercial vintage was produced in 1859 totalling 25 gallons, the foundation for one of Australia's oldest continuous winemakers. The picturesque Houghton winery property today has fifty hectares planted with premium grape varieties including Verdelho, Chardonnay, Semillon and Chenin Blanc. Early documentation and current research suggests the first vines were planted between 1830 and 1836.

In addition Houghton operates four of Western Australia's largest vineyards at Moondah Brook, Pemberton, Mt Barker and Frankland River, along with sourcing fruit from Margaret River, Harvey and emerging premium areas. These diverse wine regions provide the necessary fruit requirements vital for the production of premium table wines, which are distinctly Western Australian.

Expansion into the Western Australian South West and Great southern region led to the establishment of a second premium winery, located at Nannup in the Blackwood Valley. Together the sites provide an outstanding capability for premium wine production via minimal fruit handling with flexibility, to achieve quality excellence.

The Houghton commitment to excellence from vine to bottle has established the enviable position of Western Australia's most awarded winemaker. The portfolio includes the brands of Houghton (including the famous White Burgundy), Houghton Crofters, and Moondah Brook. The new Houghton Regional Range is a selection of elegant, premium varietal styles from key South West Western Australian regions, such as Frankland River Shiraz and Riesling; Margaret River Cabernet Sauvignon and Pemberton Chardonnay, Merlot and Sparkling Chardonnay Pinot Noir.

Special Houghton releases and the Houghton Jack Mann reserve Cabernet, reflect the ultra premium winemaking abilities and cellaring potential of Houghton wines. The late Jack Mann, creator of Houghton White Burgundy in 1937, was the driving force of Houghton for 51 years and a legendary character of Western Australia. Long time friend Dr John Gladstones has supported the regionlised direction of Houghton, endorsing the Frankland River super premium Shiraz with his name. This followed the development of the Houghton Regional Range holding aligned varieties within Western Australian sub-regions.

Today, the name Houghton is synonymous with fine wines and the parkland gardens, historic cellars and restored homestead (of Scottish Croft design) provide picturesque surroundings for wines which have become a piece of Australian wine history.
