Pinocchio Arneis 2008

Garry and Rollo Crittenden are dedicated vignerons who channel their efforts into producing small batches of fine wine. Arneis is a rare varietal originating from Piedmonte in northwest Italy which came close to extinction. Crittenden was the first commercially released Arneis made in the southern hemisphere. A backbone of fruit is sourced from vineyards in the King Valley which is endowed with a climate almost identical to Piedmont. An addition from a smaller site in Mornington contributes vibrant fruit characters and aromatics

Pizzini delight in the diversity of Italian varietal wines, grown to the idyllic microclimes of the Victorian Alps. Viticulture here is a highly specialized affair which requires skillful clonal planting regimes and vine trellising techniques. "Why drink ubiquitous savblanc when you can enjoy this refreshing different wine? Arneis is another Piedmont variety, but rare, it is great to see it doing well under Australian conditions. YarraLoch Arneis 2008

The Italians named the variety Arneis because it means little rascal, a difficult grape to manage in the vineyard and rarely cultivated in great amounts. Mostly it is used with Nebbiolo in the same way as Viognier is added to Shiraz, to soften, to enhance and to pefume. Within Australia, usually the cooler vineyards of Victoria, it has finally found it's niche as a pure varietal wine.
