Grasshopper Rock Pinot Noir 2008
Gold London International, Blue Gold & Top 1OO Sydney. Named for a rare grasshopper Sigaus childi, found only in Central Otago within the Earnscleugh gold tailings, across the road from the vineyard. The site is sufficiently harsh and difficult to make the vines work their hardest. With extremes of heat and cold comes the risk of spring and autumn frosts, a demanding but rewarding environment for the production of world class Pinot Noir. "Another new-world producer that pinotphiles would do well to put on their watch lists at once!" -Acehighwine.com

Earnscleugh Road is at the southernmost latitude of established wine growing in Central Otago. At 45°15' south, the property is one of the most isolated in the world, along with a select group of other sites on the Earnscleugh Rim. Grasshopper Rock is one of the few tracts of quality arable land in the Dunstan Basin. Within the site, there are three distinct areas, Blocks 1 and 2 are hill soils on shattered schist, Blocks 3 and 4 are at the foot of the hill on loamy sand over schist gravel, Blocks 5 and 6 are out from the hill on loamy sand and stony schists. A single vineyard wine from fruit grown to hand managed vines, crafted to traditional vinification techniques and matured in a selection of new and seasoned French oak barrels
Bright, deep scarlet. Big opulent nose of cherries and maraschino, stalkinesss and soils, cinammon curl and vanilla, blackberries, beetroots and five spice. A plum lined, velvet textured palate with savouryness and excellent length of fine, firm tannin. Background oak in support of a solidly structured wine, closes to juicy cherry acids and lingering varietal fruit. "Deep and rich, with ripe cherry, plum, herb and spice flavours, hints of raisins and coffee and good, savoury complexity!" -NZ Wine Buyer's Guide, "Intense cherry aromas complimented by cinnamon and a touch of black pepper. Medium level of fine tannins, medium high acid. Medium full body and good concentration. Long finish!" -Wine Advocate.com
