Longhop Shiraz 2009
Adelaide Plains Shiraz, and what great wine it makes, abundant yet graceful, generous and stylishly balanced. Longhop is a robust style of Aussie red in every sense, distinctive, complex and vinous, full bodied and delicious, oozing dark fruit flavours, punching way above its weight. Smooth ferments and great colours with splendid peppery notes from some of the old vine fruit. The inaugural vintage was a complete sellout after being the subject of ecstatic praise from the industry press. Total production this year was a scant 1½ thousand cases

From the Manno, Noto, Varacalli and Ryder vineyards in the Angle Vale, Evanston Gardens and Bibaringa sub regions surrounding Mt Lofty Ranges. Shiraz vines aged fourteen to fifty+ years are trained to T-trellis and single wire, planted to red clay over limestone and alluvial sandy loam soils, yielding an average of two tonnes per acre. Components are treated to a wild, whole bunch fermentation in small open top vessels with soft pump overs and minimal plunging, before being treated to an old fashioned basket press and completing fermentation in barrel. The finished wine was matured fourteen months in a selection of French barriques and American hogsheads before bottling without filtration. Alcohol 14.2%
Dark, deeply coloured wine. Very aromatic with spice, dark cherry, plums and chocolate. Flavours follow through with lots of intensity and bountiful ripe tannins to cap off the long savoury finish. "Completely engrossing palate of vibrantly fresh red fruits, the finish supported by a mattress of gently yielding tannins and disciplined background oak!" -Cellarfreaks.com, "Immediately agreeable from the first mouthful, what you can't finish on the night will develop the following day into a substantial shiraz of structure and elegance. This purple-jube flavoured wine assimilates layers of tarry tannins, milky oak and copious berry expressions into an opaque elixir that indulges the appetite and engages the senses!" -Pinotfiles.com
