Provenance Pinot Noir 2008
Provenance was established with the objective of making great wines that exhibit the quality of fruit and terroir from choice vineyards in and around the Geelong viticultural precinct. "This is succulent stuff. This wine has intensity, refinement and line. A classic pinot noir of real depth and length that is utterly delicious, down to the last drop!" -Gourmet Traveller, "Elegance is the key word with Provenance, a stirling effort that embodies the best of what Geelong's superlative mesoclimes can achieve. One of the best Victorians on offer!" -Ozwinenews.com

Situated in the Moorabool Valley near Geelong, the Provenance Pinot Noir vineyard has a southeast aspect and is planted to red loam soils over a limestone base. These soils are well drained and grow vines of moderate vigour. Handpicked fruit is 70% de-stemmed and barely crushed (crusher wheels wide open), on top of the remaining 30% whole-bunch in small open fermenters. Indigenous fermentation begins three days post harvest and ferment temperatures reach a peak of 32 °C. The cap was hand plunged as required. At completion of ferments the wine was pressed, settled and went to barrel where natural malolactic takes place. Ten months barrel maturation was punctuated by two rackings prior to filtration and bottling
Brilliant crimson red. Lifted fruit aromas of plum, red berries and spice are complemented by a subtle thread of clove oak. The promised fruit flavours are immediately evident on tasting, as is the fine and supple texture. Fleshy fruit weight blossoms on the mid palate leading to a classic peacocks tail opening of flavour throughout the length. Refined tannin is a feature working harmoniously with a fine natural acid line. Key attributes of generosity (flavour) and vitality (structure) speak much of the outstanding balance. A classic, displaying myriad complexities that drink well now, with the capacity to amply reward those who choose to cellar. Suited to lamb or duck, rabbit and mushroom risotto
